Facts about Lubricant Oil

Do you have any idea what is Lubricating Oil?

Let’s understand in detail…

What is Lubricating oil?

Lubricating oil is also known asthe blood of an engine, It is a type of oil use to reduce friction, heat, wear and tear between mechanical components that come in contact with one another. Lubricant oil is also used in motorized vehicles and it’s also known as motor oil, engine oil and transmission fluid. The main function of lubricating oil is to lubricate the engine parts so that friction and its wear and tear is reduced to bare minimum.

Do you know the uses of lubricating oil?:

  • Moving the parts apart from each other:

Lubricants are typically wont to separate moving parts during a system. This has the advantage of friction reduction and surface fatigue, together with reduced heat generation, operation noise and vibrations. Lubricants achieve this in several ways the most common is by forming a physical barrier.

  • Reducing friction:

Typically the lubricant-to-surface friction is much less than surface-to-surface friction in a system without any lubrication. Thus the use of a lubricant reduces the general system friction. Reducing friction has the advantage of reducing heat production and reduced formation of wear and tear particles also as improved efficiency.

  • Transfer of Heat:

Gas and liquid can deliver heat. However, liquid lubricants are much more effective because they have high heat capacity when circulated to and from the cooler part of the system.  Lubricants may be used to warm as well as to cool  a system when a regulated temperature is required.

  • Preventing from the contaminators and debris:

Lubricants oil manufactures in UAE have the advantage of carrying away internally generated debris and external contaminants that get introduced into the system to a filter where they will be removed.

  • Transmit power:

Hydraulic fluids are used as the working fluid in hydrostatic power transmission. Hydraulic fluids comprise an outsized portion of all lubricants produced within the world.

  • Seal for gases:

Lubricants will also occupy the clearance amid moving parts via the capillary force, hence sealing the clearance. This technique can be used to steal pistons and shafts.

How lubricating oil is manufactured?

  • Lubricant oil is refined from crude oil, after going through a purifying process called sedimentation. The process takes place in huge fractionating tower by heating crude oil. Then after this process lube oil is collected and filtered and then it’s mixed with some additives to give it to the desired physical properties.

Did you know?

The lubricating oil of different viscosities can be blended together, and it is this ability to blend them that makes some oils so useful . for example, common gasoline is usually a mix of low viscosity oil to permit for straightforward starting at cool temperatures and a high viscosity oil for better performance at normal running temperature.

Improving smoothness:

Lubrication is simply the use of a material to improve the smoothness and movement of one surface over another. Lubricants are usually liquids or semi-liquids and gases.

In addition to reducing or controlling friction, lubricants are usually expected to reduce wear and tear, and often to prevent overheating and corrosion.

What is the importance of putting oil in an engine:

The importance of oiling an is just like blood to the body. Blood flows through all the veins to the vital organs to keep them healthy and alive, similarly the function of lubricating oil is to an engine.  Across the world, lubricant oil is primarily used for cooling automobile engines, marine engines and for industrial purposes.

Did you know?

Globally, more than 50% of the total lubricant volume is being used for automobiles, approx.. 40% for industrial purposes and rest in the marine industry

How many lubricants classification do you know?

There are 4 types of lubricant classification

  • Gaseous lubricants
  • Liquid lubricants
  • Semi-solid lubricants
  • Solid lubricants

So let’s start by knowing about the Gaseous lubricants

Gases like helium and nitrogen are used as lubricants in solutions where film thickness between tribe-pair is very small. Also, the advantages of using gas lubricants are large temperature range, no sealing required for lubrication, very low friction. So, thanks to low viscosity, no vaporization, no solidification, and no decomposition.

The disadvantage of using gas lubricants are low load capacity, lower tolerance for any reason in load estimation and the need for a specialist designer in creating smooth surfaces with low clearance.

Liquid Lubricants:

Liquid lubricants are used extensively in applications that are high in terms of speed and load size. Liquid lubricants are the most dominant type of lubricant In the market. liquid lubricants are comprised of base oil and some activities. the various sorts of liquid lubricants are Mineral oil, Vegetable oil, Animal oil.

Semi-solid lubricants:

Grease is considered to be one of the leading and versatile sorts of lubricants. It is often utilized in a good assortment of environments across various temperatures, speeds, or load conditions, be it a dry or wet environment, dusty or clean environment, or even a corrosive environment, grease find use in all sorts of applications.

Solid lubricants:

Solid lubricant is a solid material which is applied or inserted between moving parts or bearing surfaces. This type of material will shear a lot more easily than the bearing or moving surfaces. The three main requirements for a material to be a solid lubricant are the ability to support the applied load without major distortion, a low coefficient of friction, and a low rate of wear and tear.
